Dubbed Daisy, the robot is created to retrieve high-quality iPhone components that even traditional recyclers can't recover.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, says: "At Apple, we're constantly working toward smart solutions to address climate change and conserve our planet's precious resources". For each Apple device received today through April 30, Apple will make a donation to Conservation International to support its efforts to preserve and protect the environment.

Cook cited the 3 to 4 week wait times for iPhone battery replacements at Apple retail stores earlier this year as proof that customers want to fix, rather than replace, their iThings. Consumers who donate certain devices can also get credit toward an in-store purchase or Apple gift card. Today the company introduced "Daisy", its new iPhone-recycling robot, which the company says can tear apart unwanted iPhones much more efficiently than a human.

Daisy, Apple's second-generation disassembly robot replaces Liam that was introduced in March 2016. Cobbled together from some of Liam's (the previous robot) parts like a modern-day Frankenstein, it can take apart nine versions of the iPhone and sort components for recycling.

Indeed, earlier this month the tech giant announced that they now power 100 percent of their business operations with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Liam was revealed in 2016, but now, his old parts are being used by Daisy, which is ironic, since Daisy's objective is to recycle old iPhones. This achievement includes retail stores, offices, data centers and co-located facilities in 43 countries - including China, India, the United Kingdom and the United States.

As a bonus, Apple Watch users will receive a notification about the Earth Day Challenge which encourages users to go outside and exercise for at least 30 minutes. Apple Stores around the world will mark Earth Day by donning logos with green leaves or window decorations.
