Rights are provided in three packages - global television rights plus rest of the world digital rights; digital rights for the Indian subcontinent; and a global consolidated rights bid. For overseeing the functioning of the BCCI, the Committee of Administrators (COA) constituted by the Supreme Court decided to make the process of billions of rupees contract online for the first time so that corruption can be kept away with transparency in this process.
The bidding process will be a marked departure from the BCCI's conventional closed-bid auction model, where bids could be submitted only once in sealed envelopes. The two broadcasters in spite of all aggression will enter the e-auction process with their budgetary and financial lines well defined, with little scope to breach those numbers. They'll be hoping to bag the other rights as well which will help them turn out into broadcast giants in India. The American company can be expected to put in a strong bid again for the Indian cricket team's digital rights. In the IPL rights auction past year, Star spent Rs 16,347 cr to win the rights, and while they remain much inclined to pocket the bilateral rights too, the broadcast giants do find themselves left with a tight budget.
