Employer confidence remains resilient and job seekers are expected to benefit from a favorable second-quarter hiring climate.

Both state and national hiring outlook numbers are stronger than the current quarter, when a net of 15 percent of IN employers planned to hire and 19 percent of US employers expected to add jobs.

IN employers expect to hire at what ManpowerGroup describes as "a confident pace" in April, May and June, according to survey results released today. Public and social sector employers report modest hiring plans with an outlook of +7%, while some payroll gains are forecast for the mining and quarrying sector, where the outlook stands at +6%.

The overall net outlook score of 10 per cent is 1 per cent lower than the last quarter and down 4 per cent from the same period (April-June) of 2017.

Canadian employers' hiring intentions are at their highest level in several years - and Waterloo Region's employers are even more bullish on growing their teams. Some upward momentum is detected in the year-over-year comparison with forecasts improving in 25 of 43 countries and territories, declining in 13, and remaining unchanged in five. When compared with 1Q 2018, hiring prospects are five percentage points stronger in Gauteng, and improve by two percentage points in KwaZulu-Natal. While there won't be layoffs, hiring as such will be lower than in previous quarters.

Meanwhile, the hiring scene is looking up in other countries, too.

The impact of a softer outlook in the Mining & Construction sector can be seen in Queensland where hiring expectations are down three percentage points year-on-year as the state deals with an end to the frenetic pace of apartment building in Brisbane over recent years. ManpowerGroup interviewed over 59,000 employers globally and found that the job markets are upbeat in Taiwan, Japan, Hungary, and the USA, while Italy, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland presented weak outlooks. Strong outlooks for Professional & Business Services (+24%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade (+23%) point to demand-driven growth in line with increased wages.

While the general outlook for jobseekers across the globe looks increasingly positive, surveys suggest the U.S., Asia-Pacific, and Northern Europe are the regions where employment outlook is the most optimistic. A considerable decline of 14 percentage points is reported in the North, while Outlooks are 5 and 3 percentage points weaker in the South and the West, respectively. Among the countries and territories featuring seasonally adjusted data, confidence is strongest in Taiwan, Japan, Hungary and the United States, while the weakest hiring prospects are reported in Italy, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
