Putin, who has ruled Russian Federation for nearly two decades, recorded his best ever election performance with 76.67 percent of the vote but rejected the possibility of staying in power indefinitely.

Observers in this election reported widespread cases of ballot stuffing and voters coerced by their employers to cast ballots.

Pointing out the close ties between Caracas and Moscow, the official statement from Nicolas Maduro said, "On behalf of the Venezuelan people, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro congratulates Russian president Vladimir Putin on being re-elected president for the period of 2018-2024".

Mr Putin extended his rule over Russian Federation for another six years at a time when his ties with the West are on a hostile trajectory.

"What, am I going to sit here until I am 100 years old?"

"Listen to me. It seems to me that what you are saying is a bit amusing", he told reporters Sunday night when asked if he saw himself running for president again in 2030.

Speaking at an event to mark the anniversary of the annexation on Sunday night, Putin told crowds in Manezhnaya Square, just under the Kremlin walls: "Thank you for your support ..."

Spokesman for Putin's campaign Andrei Kondrashov said that at more than 67 percent, turnout was 8 to 10 percentage points higher than expected.

Central election commission chair Ella Pamfilova outlined to reporters Monday authorities' efforts to fight violations and hold a transparent election.

"Our people always unite in the trying hour".

Sunday's election was the first presidential vote on the Crimean peninsula since Moscow annexed the territory from Ukraine in 2014, prompting a further decline in Russia's relations with the West.

Germany's foreign minister is calling on Russian Federation to make more "constructive contributions" to dialogue after President Vladimir Putin won re-election.

Britain and Russian Federation are locked in a diplomatic dispute over the poisoning, and Washington is eyeing new sanctions on Moscow over allegations that it interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election, which Russian Federation denies.

In the run up to the vote, a new crisis broke out with the West as Britain implicated Putin in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal in England with a Soviet-designed nerve agent.

Selfie competitions, giveaways, food festivals and children's entertainers were laid on at polling stations to entice voters.

Putin has been in power as either president or prime minister since 1999.

"He wants to show that there is a little bit of Putin in every Russian, that he plays the Russian soul like a guitar", said political analyst Konstantin Kalachev.

Navalny said his team planned to stage protests but released few details. The vote was "unprecedentedly clean", said Maxim Grigoriev, deputy head of the Russian Civic Chamber's monitoring group, RIA Novosti reported.

When the journalist brought up her Sunday row with Aleksey Navalny, who strongly rejected Sobchak's offer of alliance and accused her of everything from hypocrisy to actually accepting a "tremendous sum of money" from the Kremlin for running in the election, Sobchak answered that she was disappointed with the discussion and considered all charges against her "ridiculous".

The electoral commission dismissed most concerns, saying monitors sometimes misinterpret what they see.
