In 2011, about 10 percent of women in the USA reported smoking during their last three months of pregnancy.

But despite these well established risks, just over 7% of women in 2016 reported smoking at some time during their pregnancy, according to the report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which drew information from birth certificates. Despite the fact that it's entrenched that cigarette smoking amid pregnancy has been related to low birthweight, preterm birth and different birth surrenders.

The CDC reports it used data from the 2016 National Vital Statistics System, which is based on information using birth certificate and birth information on all USA births.

Among age groups, the smoking rate was 10.7 percent among women 20 to 24, followed by women 15 to 19 at 8.5 percent and 25 to 29 at 8.2 percent.
