Glushkov was a close friend and business associate of Boris Berezovsky, the Russian oligarch who was found dead at his ex-wife's home in 2013.

Police were called at 2246 GMT on Monday to a residential address in Clarence Avenue, New Malden, where a man in his 60s was found dead.

Nikolai Glushkov's death comes amid heightened concern following a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in England and as the government said it would investigate the deaths of a number of Russia-linked individuals which have raised suspicions.

But he added that there was "no evidence to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury".

The Metropolitan Police said an investigation is underway, but did not name Mr Glushkov. In 1999, Glushkov was charged with money laundering and fraud after Berezovsky fell out with Russian President Vladimir Putin and fled to Britain.

Officers are not naming him because formal identification is yet to take place.

The victim is believed to be Nikolai Glushkov, who claimed political asylum in the United Kingdom after being convicted of fraud, the BBC reports. His family has been informed and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Mr Glushkov was the former deputy director of airline Aeroflot and a former finance manager of ActoVAZ.

At the time of his death, he was living alone in New Malden, south-west London and was said to be a "nice man" who used to give his neighbour's children gifts at Christmas.

He was found dead on Monday night. His death was not treated as suspicious, but his friends were not convinced and a coroner later recorded an open verdict.

Andrei Borovkov told Russian media outlets on March 13 that his client, Nikolai Glushkov, has died, but said he was unaware of the time and circumstances.
