For patients like Kate linger, her ten eggs and embryos stored at the university hospitals fertility clinic in Cleveland. He said that the clinic's staff thawed a few eggs and found that they remain viable, though they do not know how many are still usable.
During the overnight hours of March 3 and 4, one the centers egg and embryo liquid nitrogen storage tanks began to warm up. Hospital officials say about 700 patients are affected. Others, whose specimens were unaffected, were also notified.
The unexplained rise in temperatures in a liquid nitrogen tank, first reported Thursday by The Cleveland Plain Dealer, occurred sometime late Saturday or Sunday morning at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center's suburban fertility clinic. Herbert could not be reached by The Chronicle for comment. That's when the clinic performed an "emergency filling", where the tank with depleted levels of liquid nitrogen was refilled.
"This was a bad incident", Herbert said, "but I was reassured that. he did everything anybody could ever want to do".
In its statement, Pacific Fertility said an independent investigation is in progress and apologized for the incident. They have not checked any of the embryos, he said. Just as a precaution some fertility experts are checking the safety standards at their own labs to ensure this can't happen anywhere again. Herbert told the Post some of the eggs in the tank had been tested, and were undamaged.
The eggs and embryos in tank #4 had been in storage for as long as 10 years, though the tank still was in active use, Herbert said.
According to the clinic's website, its fees for egg freezing are $8,345 for the initial cycle and $6,995 for each subsequent round.
