'The Shape Of Water' Named Best Picture At 90th Annual Academy Awards

Oscars 2018 nominees 'The Shape Of Water' Named Best Picture At 90th Annual Academy Awards

Only four years ago the Oscar reached almost 44 million viewers.

For years, the Oscars had been the most-watched TV program after the Super Bowl. Nor do they include viewership from the post-11 p.m. final 48 minutes when the most prominent awards were handed out to winners that included Gary Oldman as best actor, for "Darkest Hour", and Frances McDormand, for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP). The overnight ratings reveal that the awards telecast slipped 19% from a year ago, to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers. That presentation fell behind the 2016 awards by four points. For comparison's sake, it may be worth noting that the highest-rated Oscars ceremony was hosted by Chris Rock in 2005.

As Reuters notes, The Academy Awards aren't the only major television program to struggle with falling ratings.

The fantasy romance - which stars Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaner who falls in love with a mysterious sea creature - was nominated in 13 categories and scooped the coveted Best Picture accolade, as well as Best Director for Guillermo del Toro, Best Original Music Score and Best Production Design.

January's Grammy Awards marked the program's smallest audience since 2006.

"This time, the chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers said, and I quote, 'Our singular focus will be on the show and delivering the correct envelopes, ' which does make sense", Kimmel said. From Trump to the gun debate to the ongoing Hollywood scandals, there was waaay too much material this year for the Oscars to avoid wading into serious discussions about serious topics.

The expectation was justified.

Addressing this in his opening monologue, host Jimmy Kimmel quickly turned it into a jibe at Mike Pence's reported anti-gay stance. The world is watching us. We grew up dreaming of one day working in the movies.

"To all the dreamers out there, we stand with you". Disney/Pixar's Coco won two awards including Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song for the touching "Remember Me" while Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball was awarded Best Animated Short.

Kobe Bryant also making history.

Finally, Kimmel had a member of the crowd read out a cue card introducing the next hosts - comedians Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph - only for the unsuspecting poor guy to get the pronunciation wrong, as it became evident he had no idea who the pair were.

"Don't worry. There are so many white people to come". Holland presented the award for best visual effects and came in third on Twitter.
