At Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City, crowds of students poured into the streets of Manhattan, many dressed in orange, the colour of the gun-control movement. "I lived 20 minutes away from the town in CT, so I distinctly remember the day that the Sandy Hook shooting happened.it's moments like that where you realize how severe the issue is". Others were to hold demonstrations in school gyms or on football fields.

"We need more funding for mental health in our schools - psychologists, counselors - because so many kids are depressed, and that leads to suicide, and them hurting themselves and others with guns", Harb said. The group represents the youth branch of the Women's March. It's clear that they not only want to honor the victims, but they also want to take a clear stance for more gun control.

"Our elected officials must do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to this violence", the Empower group wrote on its website.

Superintendent Michael J. Martirano is not scheduled to attend any of today's protests, Bassett said. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo will be joining some of them at two schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

"We are requesting that students do not participate in the walkout; we have sent guides to all of our schools, we have sent guides to parents, that if students do decide to walk out they will be marked as tardy and if they miss the entire class they will be marked truant".

After the walkout Wednesday, some students in MA say they plan to rally outside the Springfield headquarters of Smith & Wesson, where students and religious leaders are expected to call on the gun maker to help reduce gun violence.

But students are paying close attention to lawmakers' actions and insisting that changes are not cosmetic, but go to the root of gun violence.

The National School Walkout follows weeks of protests and walkouts around the country, protesting schools violence and gun regulation.

The rise in student activism comes after the recent high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

A solar flare that erupted on August 4, 1972, knocked out long-distance communication across some U.S. states, according to NASA. When the sun emits superheated plasma, otherwise known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), it can trigger a geomagnetic storm.

Students have also said they hope the movement sparks change on a local level with everyday security.

In Tinker, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of several students who wore black armbands to their schools to protest the war in Vietnam and to support a truce over the winter holidays. For students participating, peaceful assembly will be allowed at predetermined locations designated by school administrators to maximize student safety.

But some vowed to walk out anyway.

"We'd rather be scared for a math test than our lives", said Calum Nguyen, a high school senior in Beaverton.

"Our principals know this is a teachable moment for our students", Roberts said.

Other schools sought a middle ground, offering "teach-ins" or group discussions on gun violence. Some worked with students to arrange protests in safe locations on campus.

According to the National Coalition Against Censorship, generally, school officials can't discipline student protesters unless the protests cause a disruption of school events or make it impossible for school officials to maintain order.

Students who do not show up for class will be marked as unexcused and parents will be notified. The American Civil Liberties Union issued advice for students who walk out, saying schools can't legally punish them more harshly because of the political nature of their message. In Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Texas, some lawyers said they will provide free legal help to students who are punished.
