Russia's Foreign Ministry retaliates against UK

TASS said Moscow was expected to inform Bristow about retaliatory measures after Britain's decision to expel Russian diplomats over the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

"Britain's failure to cooperate on the Skripal poisoning is a major violation of chemical weapons convention", Lavrov said in comments attributed to him and posted on Twitter by the Russian Embassy in London.

Russian news agencies cited politicians in Russia's upper house of parliament as welcoming the move to close the British Council, alleging it had been used as a cover by British spies.

The Met Police said: "There are a number of scenes in place, linked to the investigation into two people being taken ill in Salisbury on Sunday, 4 March".

Earlier, the British Prime Minister Theresa May said that 23 Russian diplomats are to be expelled following the nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

Mrs May said Russian Federation offered no explanation for having an undeclared chemical weapons programme in contravention of global law.

The investigation will be carried out in accordance with "Russian and global law", it said, adding that "investigators are ready to work together with competent authorities in Great Britain".

Britain, the United States, Germany and France have jointly called on Russia to explain the attack, while US President Donald Trump has said it looks as if the Russians were behind it.

On Friday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said it was overwhelmingly likely that Russian President Vladimir Putin himself had made the decision to use a military-grade nerve toxin to strike down Skripal.

Professor Anthony Glees said May has shown that it is a "probability that borders on certainty" that Russian Federation was behind the nerve agent attack.

Russian Federation also gave a dismissive response to Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson's call for it to "go away and shut up".

Russia's ambassador in London, Alexander Yakovenko, said Britain's actions were "absolutely unacceptable" and "a provocation".

Russian scholar Vladislav Inozemtsev, based at the Polish Institute of Advanced Studies in Warsaw, said Putin and his top officials would "never assume responsibility".

"We take the findings of the British government very seriously".

Following the Salisbury incident, the British government has also pledged to re-examine 14 deaths on United Kingdom soil following a report that they could have been carried out by Moscow or the Russian mafia. Russian officials had previously said that Russia had destroyed the Novichok weapons when it had dismantled its chemical arsenal, which was completed previous year.

London's Metropolitan Police said Friday it had launched a murder investigation into Glushkov's death following the results of a post-mortem exam, which gave the cause of death as "compression to the neck".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the accusations against Russian Federation are groundless.

In a dramatic twist Friday, the Metropolitan Police said that the death of Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov, who was found dead Monday in his London home, was now being treated as murder.
