Former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia remain in critical condition after they were targeted by a substance believed to be a Novichok nerve agent developed by Russian Federation, an attack that Britain and France said was undoubtedly carried out under Russia's orders, the BBC reported.

Skripal, a former colonel in the GRU who betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence, and his daughter have been critically ill since March 4, when they were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury, an elegant cathedral city.

The attack on Skripal would increase anxiety among Russian exiles in Britain, "particularly for people who ask for political asylum", if the government fails to take tougher action, she said.

May announced that 23 Russian diplomats will be expelled from Britain and told to leave within a week.

President Trump said Russia must provide "unambiguous answers" on how a Russian-developed poison was used in England against an ex-Russian spy. However, she said the government has revoked an invitation to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to pay a reciprocal visit to the United Kingdom this year and there will be no attendance by United Kingdom ministers or members of the Royal Family at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A British policeman who was also poisoned when he went to help them is in a serious but stable condition.

Skripal, a former Russian double agent, was jailed in Russia in 2006 for selling state secrets to British intelligence for 10 years, but he was released in 2010 as part of a high-profile spy swap.

"Either this was a direct act by the Russian state against our country or the Russian government lost control of this potentially catastrophically damaging nerve agent and allowed it to get into the hands of others". "And as I set out on Monday it has taken place against the backdrop of a well-established pattern of Russian state aggression across Europe and beyond".

Mrs May said she would be pushing for a "robust worldwide response" when the United Nations Security Council met yesterday in NY to discuss the attack on Mr Sergei Skripal and his daughter on March 4.

"It must be met with a full and robust response", May said.

She identified the chemical as a Novichok, a class of extremely deadly nerve agents developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s.

As May spoke, a British counterterrorism unit opened a second investigation into the unexplained death of an enemy of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Moscow won't accept absolutely unfounded accusations, which are not substantiated by any evidence", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

She said Britain sought support from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the United Nations, the European Union (EU) and the United States, but she did not mention any specific requests for allies to join in the reprisals.

After Russia missed the deadline for an explanation, May told parliament on Wednesday that Russia responded with "sarcasm" and "contempt".
