Officials Recommended Fla. Suspect To Be Committed For Mental Evaluation

Nikolas Cruz in court for his arraignment at Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale Officials Recommended Fla. Suspect To Be Committed For Mental Evaluation
Patty Aguilar | 19 March, 2018, 09:31

The recommendation was never acted upon, reports revealed.

Officials had recommended that accused Florida shooter Nikolas Cruz be forcibly committed for a mental evaluation in 2016 but no one acted on the recommendation, The Associated Press reported.

According to The Chicago Tribune, a commitment under the law would have made it more hard if not impossible for Nikolas Cruz to obtain a gun legally.

More than a year before Cruz allegedly killed 17 people and injured 17 others, he told a classmate he wanted to by and use a gun, wrote "kill" in a notebook, cut himself intentionally after a break-up, and told someone he once drank gasoline and vomited from it, according to the documents.

â–ºMake it easy to keep up-to-date with more stories like this. If he had been, Cruz would have had a much harder time getting a gun since federal law prohibits individuals who have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution from purchasing or possessing firearms.

Under Florida's Baker Act, involuntary commitment of a person may be initiated by an official, including a judge, mental health physician or law enforcement officer, such as Peterson.

School Minister Nick Gibb added, "It is thanks to teachers like Andria that standards are rising in schools across the country". She also visits students at home to strengthen their relationship with the school. "That's how phenomenal they are".

Such an involuntary commitment would also have been a high obstacle if not a complete barrier to legally obtaining a firearm, such as the AR-15 rifle used in the Stoneman Douglas massacre on February 14, authorities say.

On the day of the shooting, Peterson was stationed outside as Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's resource officer. Representatives for Peterson, Broward County Public Schools, and Henderson Behavioral Health did not immediately respond to HuffPost's requests for comment.

Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of first-degree murder, as well as 17 counts of attempted murder.

Cruz now faces murder charges and the death penalty. (Cruz) states that he cut because he was lonely, states that he had broken up with his girlfriend and reports that his grades had fallen. Recently, authorities bowed to a court order and released CCTV footage from the school that showed Peterson standing outside the school while Cruz rampaged inside, which Sheriff Scott Israel said would justify legal proceedings against him. "(Cruz) states that he is better now, reports that he is no longer lonely and states that his grades have gone back up".

The FBI was also under fire for not acting on tips suggesting Cruz was possibly planning a school shooting.

Again, very little was done.
