Neil deGrasse Tyson Disproves The Flat Earth Theory

Neil de Grasse Tyson Proves the Earth is Round Neil de Grasse Tyson Proves the Earth is Round

Believing that the Earth is flat was an excusable error back in the days before high-powered telescopes and space travel but today?

Honestly, Tyson spends the entire nine minute video citing facts that any normal, sane person already knows, but which will bounce right off the noggins of just about any Flat Earther.

"We have video from space of the rotating spherical Earth", said Tyson.

In a new YouTube video posted March 9 on the StarTalk channel, Tyson explains his argument to co-host and stand-up comic Chuck Nice. Gravity wouldn't work like it does on our planet if Earth were flat, due to the center of mass being in the middle of the disc instead of the center of a sphere, so that's right out the window.

What is completely extraordinary is the fact that these flat-earthers believe that all other celestial bodies are round except for the earth.

It's easy to see why Clark is skeptical that anyone actually still subscribes to the flat Earth theory in light of the logic presented by Tyson.

Tyron added that another evidence of the planet's round curvature can be seen during lunar eclipses. According to the astrophysicist, when a ship flows towards the horizon, its lower part seems to submerge under the water and this explains that the Earth is a spherical body. Tyson states that if three wells were considered for this experiment, there is no explanation available by flat Earth theory that the bottom of three wells was illuminated at three different angles cast by the Sun. Eratosthenes stated that when he looked for the bottom of the well in Syene, the bottom was clearly visible at the noontime but when he observed the other well in Alexandria at noontime, the bottom was not clearly visible. First, that the planet is round with a sun located at a farther distance. His view differs from that of astronomer and author Stuart Clark, who told Business Insider UK earlier this year that he believes flat-Earthers are simply being amusing by saying that Earth is flat.

Neil deGrasse Tyson blames the educational system in the USA for the perpetuation of the flat Earth theory because he doesn't think it teaches critical thinking skills.

"Our system needs to train you not only what to know, but how to think about information and knowledge and evidence", said Tyson.

The discussion featured in the video is based on a chapter included in Tyson's book Astrophysics for People in a Hurry.

We all have a lot of questions we'd like to ask Flat Earthers, with number one being a shrieked, 'How can you possibly believe this nonsense?'
