In a series of Twitter posts today (March 23), Musk said he would delete SpaceX's Facebook page, as well as the one for his electric auto company Tesla, while answering messages from other Twitter users.

The SpaceX and Tesla pages were subsequently deleted from Facebook, along with the page for Musk's solar firm Solar City.

The SpaceX CEO has apparently deleted the company's Facebook page, which at the time of its removal had more than 2.7 million followers.

At least Musk didn't delete his companies' Instagram accounts. Instagram was acquired by Facebook in 2012.

The fact is, most advertisers need Facebook as a platform because its reach is so great, so any break is likely to only be temporary, said Allen Adamson, founder of brand-marketing consultancy Metaforce. "I'm deeply disappointed to hear that SpaceX's launch failure destroyed our satellite that would have provided connectivity to so many entrepreneurs and everyone else", Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook.

The move comes a week after revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a British data firm that contracted with the Donald Trump presidential campaign, retained private data from 50 million Facebook users despite claiming to have deleted it.

After an alleged data theft of almost 50 million users involving Cambridge Analytica, Facebook came under massive scrutiny for its privacy laws and the amount of data it shares with third-parties. Developed in 2014, the software was created to compile information from people based on their likes on Facebook.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Cambridge Analytica gained access to millions of Facebook users' data in 2016. Why? People are furious and deleting their accounts to avoid further mishaps or providing a channel to be influenced any further.

"Delete SpaceX on Facebook if you're the man?" chimed in @serdarsprofile.

Musk zinged back, "I didn't realize there was one. Will do", replied Musk. One on the left looks official. "Will be gone soon".

Elon Musk has joined the #DeleteFacebook movement, removing the Tesla Motors and SpaceX pages from the beleaguered social network.

Well, he answered this and said that he doesn't mind Instagram as long as the social media app remains independent. Facebook offers one of the cheapest marketing tools out there that yield high-engagement.
