A lawyer for the Trump Organization downplayed reports that special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE had subpoenaed the company for documents, saying it has been cooperating with the investigation and calling the revelation "old news".
The Trump Organization, which U.S. President Donald Trump ran with his family before he entered the White House, played down the significance of any subpoena, a lawyer saying on Thursday that the company has told the public since July that it is being cooperative with the special counsel's investigation. Alan Futerfas, an attorney for the Trump Organization, said in a statement that Thursday's reports are "old news and our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today". The Times reported that witnesses who have been interviewed by the special counsel were asked about a "possible real estate deal in Moscow".
Mueller has charged several Trump associates and more than a dozen Russians.
The subpoena is the first acknowledged demand for records from President Trump's firm. The Trump Organization didn't return a request for comment.
Sources previously told CNN that Mueller's investigators had been asking witnesses about Trump's business activities in Russian Federation prior to his presidential run, including an unrealized attempt for a Trump Tower in Moscow. The president declined to say how he would respond if he concluded that the special counsel had crossed that line.
Citing "two people briefed on the matter", The New York Times reported that Mueller's investigators had issued the subpoena to Trump's company "in recent weeks". Mr. Trump did not say what he would do if Mueller took the investigation in that direction, however. He is also examining whether the president has tried to obstruct the investigation.
Mueller's office declined comment Thursday.
At the same time, Trump is considering whether to bring on a new lawyer to help represent him in the special counsel's investigation.
