Mara: Odell Beckham 'needs to use' better judgment

In each of the Giants co-owner's answers, the disappointment that he was having to discuss yet another off-field issue with his star wideout was palpable. He was asked about video that surfaced on social media of Beckham alongside a woman who had a credit card and what appeared to be a white powdery substance.

"I mean we're certainly not shopping him, if that's what you're asking", Mara said.

What Mara would like to see is Beckham playing many more years for the Giants, but only if he can prove he is mature enough to handle being the face of the franchise and not continually become the subject of back-page headlines.

Beckham is scheduled to make nearly $8.5 million this season and has said he wants to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

"I don't think we've made a determination on that just yet", he said.

Beckham, who has torched opposing secondaries for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns over his first four National Football League seasons, is entering the final year of his rookie deal. "But, again, when you're coming off a season where you're 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn't say anybody is untouchable".

When asked to elaborate on why he was exhausted of answering questions about Beckham's off-field activities, Mara said he was "just sick of" doing it. ". I'm exhausted of answering questions about Odell's behavior". Shurmur told NFL Network's Kimberly Jones that meeting was more about "getting to know" Beckham, but the head coach's feelings on whether or not Beckham needs to mature seemed to be in line with Mara's.

"I'm just sick of answering the questions", he said.

"I think at some point", he said, "but who knows?" Mara is disappointed. "It's too often he allows himself to be put in bad situations and uses bad judgment", Mara said. "You can draw your own conclusions from that".

Last week, the Giants traded longtime defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a surprising move. "He knows what's expected of him".

Meanwhile, Beckham was named last week in a $15 million lawsuit filed by a man claiming he was brutally beaten by Beckham's bodyguard and another man. Beckham did not participate in the alleged fight, but he did not order security to stop, the man, Ishmael Temple, said. On the potential that the Giants could trade Beckham rather than commit to him long term, Mara added: "You always listen to those things, but it's not a scenario that I'd like to see happen".
