They found that binge drinking was most common among adults aged 18 to 34, but more than half of all binge drinks consumed were from adults ages 35 years and older. The health agency added that binge drinking in the USA has caused over half of America's 88,000 alcohol-related deaths per year, and about three-fourths of the damages linked to excessive drinking, which are estimated at around $249 billion.

The study, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, found that 37.4 million Americans, or one out of every six adults, binge drink about once a week.

The researchers then multiplied the estimated total number of binge-drinking episodes by the average largest number of drinks consumed per episode, for a whopping 17.5 billion binge drinks consumed in 2015. It includes binge drinking, which is four or five [drinks at a sitting] for men.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System is a phone survey that collects yearly data on health and risk behaviors of US adults.

The researchers found that a total of 17% of all USA adults, or 37.4 million, people, reported binge-drinking in 2015.

Theresa May has said Porton Down has found the nerve agent used was part of a group developed by Russian Federation . He told the BBC: "Russia is the country that invented it, has the experience, turned it into a weapon".

Binge drinking was also much more common in men than women, with 4 out of 5 binge drinks consumed by males. And though binging was higher among younger age groups, it was present across all ages, including those 65 years old or older.

In a statement, CDC lead researcher Dr. Robert Brewer said that the trend is a disturbing one, as it offers further proof that binge drinkers in the USA might be putting themselves and other people at risk with their practice.

Binge drinkers consumed the most alcohol in Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii, and the least in Washington, DC; New Jersey, New York, and Washington State. "The findings also show the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to prevent binge drinking, focusing on reducing both the number of times people binge drink and the amount they drink when they binge", he said.

The dangers of binge drinking can range from social issues like unintentional injuries, interpersonal violence and suicide. Binge drinking was most common among higher income individuals - $75,000 or more per household - but alcohol dependence was more common among people with household income of less than $25,000. On average, binge drinking took place about once a week, with the average number of drinks at seven. Excessive alcohol use is also associated with a higher risk of serious health problems such as cancer, heart disease, and liver failure. The study finds that while 1 in 3 Americans drink excessively, they don't necessarily have an alcohol addiction.

The government recommends that if people use alcohol, it be used in moderation, meaning up to one drink per day for adult women and up to two drinks per day for men, the CDC said.
