Guccifer 2.0 Outed As Russian Spy By VPN Slip Up

Not the same hacker obviously Not the same hacker

USA investigators have reportedly discovered that "Guccifer 2.0", the hacker who claimed credit for a breach of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) during the 2016 election, revealed himself as a Russian intelligence operative.

"Working off the IP address, US investigators identified Guccifer 2.0 as a particular GRU officer working out of the agency's headquarters on Grizodubovoy Street in Moscow", the Daily Beast reported. Now a single incident when the "lone wolf" apparently forgot to use a VPN shows the hacker using an IP address based in Moscow and linked to Russian intelligence agency - the GRU. They were also able to find that he worked out of the agency's headquarters in Moscow.

Stone also published an article on Breitbart News, saying, "It doesn't seem to be the Russians that hacked the DNC, but instead a hacker who goes by the name of Guccifer 2.0". Pictured is Kremlin's Towers in Moscow. Guccifer 2.0 began releasing the emails in July 2016, months before the U.S. presidential elections.

The firm is alleged to have created psychological profiles to influence how people vote or even think about politics and society. Speaking at a conference in New York, Facebook's head of news partnerships, Campbell Brown, conceded the threat was "a mistake".

The DNC materials that were sent to Wikileaks and other organisations exposed details about Hilary Clinton's presidential campaign and information about how the DNC operated internally; it could be seen as a game changer for President Donald Trump ahead of the election. Guccifer 2.0 started leaking internal DNC documents soon after. In addition, while the U.S. government has not yet confirmed the claims, past year United States intelligence officers linked Guccifer 2.0 to the agency with "high confidence". Despite this, both US intelligence agencies and independent cybersecurity firms have long linked the hacker to Russian Federation.

Now that special counsel Robert Mueller and the Federal Bureau of Investigation know that Russian actors were behind Guccifer 2.0, it's harder for Trump to ignore that his team was in contact with Russia. Stone has rejected the suggestion that Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian agent.

USA should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russia probe MORE, who is leading the probe into Russian election meddling, has taken over the probe into Guccifer, according to the Daily Beast, which reported that he added Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to his team who previously worked to track the hacker.
