Girl shot at Maryland high school dies

Patty Aguilar | 24 March, 2018, 10:57

BALTIMORE - Jaelynn Willey, the 16-year-old girl wounded in the school shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland, died Thursday night, hours after her parents said they would take her off life support.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said Friday that Jaelynn Willey died at 11:34 p.m. Thursday.

Melissa Willey said she had made the decision because her daughter, Jaelynn Willey, was brain dead.

Supporters of Jaelynn Willey and her family set up an online page for well-wishers to provide donations.

The mother, holding a young baby, said, "On Tuesday. our lives changed completely and totally forever". "She is brain dead, and has nothing, no life left in her".

She had been in critical condition since the shooting.

Other family stood behind Melissa as she spoke and a group of friends stood off to one side. "The second oldest of 9 children, Jaelynn is not only a role model to her siblings, but also a dedicated student and member of her school's swim team".

Desmond Barnes, 14, who also was in the hallway, was wounded by Rollins but was released Wednesday from MedStar St. Mary's Hospital after surgery on his thigh, officials said.

The 16-year-old girl who was gunned down by her ex-boyfriend in a Maryland school earlier this week has died. "It is hard for us not to see her shining, smiling face right now, and to see her light up the room with her presence", Cormier said.

Willey and Rollins had a prior relationship that recently ended and the shooting is not believed to be random, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.

A school resource officer who arrived on the scene within one minute exchanged gunfire with Rollins, who was fatally shot. A deputy sheriff stationed at the school confronted Rollins and they simultaneously fired at each other, according to police.

His mother, Kimberly Dennis, said in a statement Thursday evening that "our entire family is eternally grateful that Desmond is alive, doing well and in good spirits".

Rollins died after shooting Willey.

Jaelynn was rushed to the hospital after the Tuesday morning school shooting at Great Mills High School.

On Saturday, students will demand legislative reforms to firearms laws at March for Our Lives rallies across the country.

Tuesday's tragedy came just a month after Nikolas Cruz allegedly murdered 17 people at a Parkland, Florida high school, setting off a nationwide debate about gun control.
