Jim Bowen, the comedian and television presenter best known for Bullseye, has died aged 80.

The show, which ran between 1981 and 1995, was watched by over 12 million viewers, and was especially popular among students.

His "super, smashing, great" and 'now look what you could have won...' catchphrases helped turn him into a cult figure.

His greatest love was his wife Phyllis with whom he has two children.

Bowen's agent, Martin, said: "I will very sadly miss Jim. We are all shedding a tear", he said.

Well, from all at Hot Press, have a smashing time up there with the starts pal! "It wasn't completely unexpected, he's been ill for several weeks in hospital", he said.

Bowen presented a morning radio show for Radio Lancashire between 1999 and 2002 but resigned after making a racist remark on air.

The former deputy headmaster, who was born in Lancashire, began his career as a stand-up comedian on the club circuit in the 1960s.

Despite being all about the darts, Bullseye is best remembered for its catchy theme tune, Bowen's ever-present catchphrases and the consistent crapness of its prizes - with contestants getting to throw darts to win a random selection of tea sets and garden furniture before gambling it all to bag themselves a speedboat.

"I've known him since the Bullseye days".

Bowen was inspired to become a comedian after watching Ken Dodd in Blackpool.

Jim had previously endured difficulties with his health and was hospitalised in 2016 after suffering a stroke.

He had a guest role in BBC1's detective drama Jonathan Creek and Peter Kay's comedy, Phoenix Nights.
