NORTH KOREA'S leader Kim Jong Un and his late father Kim Jong Il used illegally obtained genuine Brazilian passports to apply for visas to visit Western countries in the 1990s.

Reuters reported the story on Wednesday citing five senior Western European security sources.

On the condition of anonymity, he said, "This shows the desire for travel and points to the ruling family's attempts to build a possible escape route".

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un's half-brother Kim Jong-nam confided in a friend that his life was in danger months before he was murdered in a Malaysian airport, according to Reuters.

In 2011, Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the young heir visited Tokyo in 1991 on a Brazilian passport, which is before the issue date on the recently uncovered passports.

Meanwhile, a Brazilian security source, who also wished to remain anonymous, said the two documents were legitimate when sent out as blanks for consulates to issue.

Kim Jong Un reportedly went by the name "Josef Pwag" on the Brazilian passport.

There is little concrete information about Kim Jong-un's childhood, and even the exact date of his birth is the subject of debate.

A police investigator testified Tuesday that the estranged half brother of North Korea's leader told a friend in Malaysia that his life was in danger six months before he was killed at an airport. Although his true birthdate has been shrouded in secrecy, he would have been 12 to 14 years old when the passport was issued. The passports have stamps that say "Embassy of Brazil in Prague". Since taking the reins of power from his ancestors, Kim Jong Un has been known to order the execution of any political rivals, including members of his own family.

Kim Jong-un travelled under the name Josef Pwag, with a birthdate of February 1, 1983.

Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011, used the pseudonym Ijong Tchoi, and a birthdate of April 4, 1940.

Reuters has only seen photocopies of the passports so was unable to discern if they had been tampered with.
