In April previous year, the NIA had arrested three senior officials of the Nagaland government for their alleged role in large scale extortion and illegal tax collection on behalf of the NSCN (K) from various government departments. The NIA has asked the former Nagaland CM to appear with the documents pertaining to the illegal payments.

Former Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Monday has requested the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to defer the appearance date, which was earlier fixed on March 13, stating that it will not be possible for him to appear before the NIA in view of the Assembly session commencing from March 13.

It also stated that "to cast aspersions on the integrity of a man who wants peace and harmony for Nagaland in particular and north eastern region in general, as having committed crimes against the nation worthy to be looked into by an investigating agency instituted to investigate terror activities, is most perplexing". The probe is underway in allegations of tax collection and extortion from state government departments by banned Naga insurgent groups.

In a separate communiqué issued to the media, Zeliang noted that on February 15 and 16, just before the State Assembly elections, NIA had summoned for questioning three officials to Guwahati which included the OSD, Media Officer and Public Relations Officer to the then Chief Minister, TR Zeliang. The money was used by the organisations to fund its anti-India terror activities.

Zeliang, who heads the Nagaland People's Front (NPF), ran the previous government in Nagaland in alliance with the BJP.

In January a year ago, the NIA conducted searches at government departments in Nagaland and seized receipts that showed payments to the tune of Rs 2 crore.

A notice sent to Zeliang on March 11 has asked him to appear before the investigating officer at the NIA headquarters in Delhi. Confession by a senior NSCN-K member named Khetoshe Sumi in July 2016 had led to their arrest.

In October 2017, NIA had arrested four government officials.

Sumi reportedly revealed that he was the organisation's "in-charge of finance" and his key responsibility was to collect funds through illegal taxation of various government departments, the NIA said.
