Democrats giddy after IL primary showing

Rauner in Champaign El Democrats giddy after IL primary showing

"Thank you, Bruce Rauner, for opposing law enforcement and making IL a sanctuary state for illegal immigrant criminals", the man said.

Centrist incumbents in both parties survived high-profile primaries in IL on Tuesday, edging out restive liberal and conservative challengers in contests that served as tests of the establishment's strength against insurgents.

Illinois Democratic candidate for Governor J.B. Pritzker and his Lieutenant Governor pick Juliana Stratton arrive during his primary election night victory speech on March 20, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois.

Gov. Rauner narrowly edged out state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton by a margin of 51 percent to 48 percent Tuesday night, with Rep. Ives capturing more than 330,000 votes.

Polls are opening across IL in a primary that is being widely watched because of the money being spent in the governor's race. But the narrow wins also exposed the danger traditional candidates face in what has been a turbulent election year. The heavily Hispanic and Democratic district covers Mexican, Puerto Rican and Central American swaths of Chicago and several suburbs.

"Everywhere I go in the state, people say, 'stay strong; don't back down'".

The Grant now moves on to the general election, where she will face off against Democrat Kathleen Carrier of Carol Stream for the seat vacated by Ives in her bid to unseat Gov. Bruce Rauner. Public and private polls showed Rauner's approval rating rivaling President TrumpDonald John TrumpLieu: There will be "widespread civil unrest" if Trump fires Mueller Attorneys for Trump, Mueller hold face-to-face meeting to discuss potential interview topics: report Trump tariffs not helpful for nuclear talks, South Korea says MORE's in deep blue IL.

Rauner has served as governor since 2015 after he unseated incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn.

The Republican Governors Association, meanwhile, labeled Pritzker a "self-serving IL political insider".

Rauner, 61, took advantage of a national GOP wave four years ago to pull off a surprising victory in a state otherwise dominated by Democrats and win his first political office. The group also funded a challenge to House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, who didn't vote for the tax increase but attracted conservative anger for his failure to hold his caucus together and stop it. Durkin won easily. Associated Press writers Don Babwin in Chicago and Sarah Zimmerman in Springfield contributed. That's exactly why Khaleelah Muta-Ali voted. He also voted for religious freedom bills that are viewed as making it easier for private businesses to discriminate against gay customers. "We'll bring unity back to the party". "It's going to be a very negative campaign", said Shaw. Newman is challenging seven-term Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski. Jan Schakowsky (D) and Luis V. Gutiérrez (D). IL is heavily in debt, both in terms of its regular budget and its $130 billion in pension debt. Rauner says that's not good for taxpayers, but his own platforms are.

Pritzker has put roughly $70 million into his campaign as he now turns his attention to the November election.

Other issues are likely to come up during the campaign include taxes, job growth, wages, the opioid epidemic, gun violence, rights of women and LGBTQ people, as well as support of the president and his plans for immigration and healthcare.

The Republican primary was not one of the marquee competitions heading into the primary.

Even with Lipinski surviving, the fact that Newman battled him to a near draw will embolden liberals in other Democratic primary battles and in the larger struggle for party identity. Simply having fewer candidates won't guarantee any dropoff in the amount of yard signs and fundraising efforts and advertising campaigns that will sweep across newspapers, radio, television, social media and even email, phone calls and folks knocking on your front door asking for a moment of your time.

In Illinois' 15th Congressional District, Kevin Gaither takes the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Congressman John Shimkus in November.
