She said Britain is taking a tough line because of frustration at recent advances of Russian-backed Syrian government forces against Western-backed rebels.

Russian Federation on Saturday ordered 23 British diplomats to leave the country within a week, escalating a diplomatic row after a former spy and his daughter were poisoned on British soil.

Vladimir Putin has dismissed claims that Russian Federation was behind the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury as "nonsense".

"Another six years of slavery", said a piece of paper made up to look like a ballot which was spotted on a Moscow street - in an apparent reference to Putin's next term.

Moscow retaliated on Saturday by expelling the same number of British diplomats from Moscow, shuttering the British consulate in Russia's second city of St Petersburg and closing down the Russian activities of the British Council, which promoted British culture overseas.

Escalating a crisis in relations, Russian Federation said it was also shutting down the activities of the British Council, which fosters cultural links between the two countries, and Britain's consulate-general in St. Petersburg.

And it said it had halted the activities of the British Council, Britain's worldwide organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, across the country.

The United Kingdom accused Russian Federation of developing and stockpiling nerve agents for a decade, after Moscow suggested that a British laboratory may have been the source of the substance used to poison a former spy and his daughter.

On Friday, Johnson directly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying it was "overwhelmingly likely" that he ordered the chemical attack.

A representative for the British Embassy in Moscow told AFP it had no immediate statement in response to the moves but would release one on social media.

Experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in the Netherlands, will today meet British scientists and police to begin investigating of examining samples of the nerve agent.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on Sunday that Russia has been stockpiling the deadly nerve agent used to poison a Russian former double agent in England and has been investigating how to use such weapons in assassinations. And Mr Putin's intervention in Syria, as well as the evident esteem in which he is held by Donald Trump, may also have bolstered his claim to be making Russian Federation respected again. "We destroyed all our chemical weapons under the supervision of worldwide organisations, and we did it first, unlike some of our partners who promised to do it, but unfortunately did not keep their promises", Putin said.

But where the West sees an aggressive tyrant who has rattled the worldwide order - the extensive charge sheet includes interference in the USA presidential election and ordering the use of a nerve agent on British soil - most Russians see a leader who has brought a sense of order to their country, and restored their sense of national pride.
