The Facebook page belonging to far-right group Britain First has been removed by website bosses for breaking community standards.

The social media giant said it issued warnings to Golding and Fransen who were imprisoned last week for 18 and 36 weeks, respectively. Pages associated with those members were also booted from Facebook's platform.

Facebook defended its platform as a place for free speech in a statement, describing it as "an open platform for all ideas", including political speech, but said that political speech "should be expressed without hate". Some political opinions might be controversial, but it is important that different views can be shared and we are very careful not to remove posts or Pages just because some people don't like them.

One recent investigation from Wired UK found a whole network of Facebook pages linked to Britain First sharing the same content.

The final straw that led to Britain First's ban included anti-Islam memes likening Muslims to animals and announcing the group was "Islamophobic Proud".

Facebook stated that the group had repeatedly broken the social media website's Community Standards, despite several warnings.

President Trump caused controversy previous year when her retweeted three videos tweeted by Jayda Fransen that appeared to have an Islamophobic message.

Facebook has taken down the account of Britain First, a far-right party with a massive following on the platform, for "content created to incite animosity and hatred against minority groups", the company said.

"We do not do this lightly, but they have repeatedly posted content created to incite animosity and hatred against minority groups, which disqualifies the Pages from our service".

More than two million people had liked the page.

Britain First's massive online presence originally got kicked off thanks in part to tricking Facebook users into "liking" far more innocuous posts such as images that railed against dog fighting or memes that promoted supporting British soldiers.

Britain First had almost twice as many Facebook likes as the United Kingdom's mainstream Labour Party, which has only one million followers. In 2016, after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg chose to allow anti-Muslim comments posted by Trump to remain on the platform, the company said content that violates its standards but is otherwise "newsworthy, significant or important to the public interest" will not be removed.

It's been a rough month for the bigoted bunch, as the Britain First party leaders were both convicted for committing hate crimes on March 7.
