The Ryan Coogler-directed superhero blockbuster is the seventh film to pass $600 million domestically after Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($619 million), The Avengers ($623 million), Jurassic World ($652 million), Titanic ($658 million), Avatar ($760 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937 million).

Movies released in February have always been considered to be a dumping ground for studios' projected poor performers: "Black Panther" proved that a hit movie can thrive in the first quarter of the year. Ultimately, it's expected to end its run with around $1.25 billion.

The rebooted Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander, opened with $23.5 million at home, a modest US start for the $90 million film based on a video game.

"Black Panther" opened five weeks ago, and it's come in No. 1 at the box office for all five of those weeks. It's also now the 14th-highest film in worldwide grosses at $1.182 billion, passing both "Captain America: Civil War" and "Minions". Ticket buyers were mixed on the flick as well, giving the movie a "B" on CinemaScore.

"Tomb Raider" came in first place in Europe, almost doubling the opening results of "Red Sparrow".

And in fifth place was new Fox release "Love, Simon", at $11.5 million.

After underwhelming the box office last weekend in its debut, Disney's pricey A Wrinkle In Time took a free-fall on 3,980 screens in its sophomore session.
