America's missile-defence system not ready for hypersonic threats

Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down on his claims about Russia's nuclear capabilities Thursday following his announcement earlier in the day unveiling new drones and nuclear weapons systems.

Putin warned that any use of nuclear weapons against Russian Federation or its allies would trigger a response.

Putin said the new us policies have "raised concerns in Russian Federation".

Other observers are skeptical about Russia's supposed new arsenal, because Moscow has not shown proof of successful tests.

Hypersonic weapons under development by Russian Federation and China - as well as by the United States - can beat regular anti-missile defences as they are created to switch direction in flight and do not follow a predictable arc like conventional missiles, making them much harder to track and intercept.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump understands the threats and that America is "moving forward to modernize our nuclear arsenal and ensure our capabilities are unmatched".

In yet another weirdly dystopian twist, the Russian Ministry of Defense is apparently taking submissions from the public to name the country's newest nuclear missiles.

The high-speed underwater drone also has an "intercontinental" range and is capable of slamming a nuclear warhead into both aircraft carriers and coastal facilities, he said. He said its speed was at least 10 times faster than that of any other vessel, making it immune to enemy intercept.

TRT World spoke to Moscow-based journalist Julia Lyubova for more on the story. The Aegis Ballistic Missile system has an 84% success rate, while the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system boasts a success rate of 56%.

"No-one in the world has anything like that", he said.

He quoted a speech he gave in 2004, vowing that Russian Federation would develop a new generation of weaponry, a promise that he said he has now fulfilled.

He said the hypersonic intercontinental rocket, known as the Avangard, is capable of travelling 20 times the speed of sound and strike "like a meteorite, like a fireball".

Rood said the new National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy are clear about entering the United States into an "era of great power competition" with Russian Federation and China.

Pentagon officials said Americans should rest assured that "we are fully prepared", even as experts cast doubt on the truth of Putin's claims.

He said that the United States has ignored Russian complaints.

"No one has listened to us", he said. "Well, listen to us now". He set the targets during the domestic policy portion of a speech in which he also adopted a bellicose tone towards the West and unveiled an array of new nuclear weapons.

DARPA Director Steven Walker said the agency is working on several projects, including two in partnership with the Air Force, to develop hypersonic engines and weapon prototypes.
