She was joined in the meeting by Kim Yong Nam, another influential North Korean official, and wore a pin with the images of her father and grandfather - the North's previous leaders.

The ongoing rapprochement mood flared after Kim Jong Un said in his New Year's Day address that he was willing to send an Olympic delegation.

Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un, "courteously" handed over a personal letter from the North Korean leader to Moon during talks on Saturday and also told Moon of her brother's "intention", KCNA said, without elaborating on what that was. The sign reads: "Slave Olympics". The night before, Kim and other North Korean delegates attended the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, watching a "unified" Korean team march under a banner showing an undivided Korean Peninsula.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has warned Mr. Moon not to be taken in by North Korea's "smile diplomacy" during the Olympics, while U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence has sought to keep a spotlight on North Korea's worst attributes, vowing to impose the "toughest and most aggressive" sanctions until the country "abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs once and for all".

During Saturday's bilateral talks over lunch, neither Seoul nor Pyongyang made mention of the North Korean nuclear issue, according to South Korea's presidential office source.

North Korea has a persistent army of hackers that has attacked central banks and movie studios.

Dr Matthew Rees, advocacy policy officer at Open Doors, said: "As many nations come together to take part in the Winter Olympics, let us not forget that every day over 300,000 Christians are denied the right to take part in the religious observance of their choice".

"The US will not allow the propaganda charade by the North Korean regime to go unchallenged on the world stage", Pence tweeted on Saturday.

The result: a heady, sometimes surreal, state of affairs in a South Korea that has seen far more threat than charm out of the North.

North and South Korea have shared a heavily fortified border since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a ceasefire, not a peace treaty.

Mr. Han, however, is not convinced it means anything, saying what North Korea wants most is to reduce pain from global sanctions.

"We are investigating the cause and we will share more information". US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults as tensions rose.

He said the United States would take whatever "action is necessary to defend our homeland" against the North Korean nuclear threat, according to an interview with NBC.

"Unlike the United States, we do not engage in dirty and messy acts to abuse sports events like the Olympics for political purposes, " the newspaper said in an article attributed to an unnamed writer.

The two Koreas have a rocky and sometimes violent history at the Blue House.

At the 2003 University Games in Taegu, accusations that local right-wing groups had "ransacked" bedrooms and stolen underwear at the North Korean delegation's hotel prompted the cheerleaders to down pom-poms in protest.

The delegation, the highest-ranking to visit the South, concludes its visit later on Sunday having charmed and intrigued the South Korean public, but still faces deep scepticism over the North's sincerity towards improving relations.
