North Korea's reclusive leader Kim Jong-un has asked South Korean President Moon Jae-in to visit Pyongyang at the "earliest date" possible for what will be a third inter-Korean summit, Kim's sister told the South Korean leader on Saturday.

Moon apparently cited the conditions necessary for an inter-Korean summit.

Moon met Kim Yo Jong - a close confidant of her brother and the first member of the dynasty to set foot in the South since the Korean War - and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam at the Blue House in Seoul. Pence stayed for only five minutes before leaving and headed to Pyeongchang where he applauded the USA delegation of Winter Olympic athletes at the opening ceremony.

Moon Jae-in asked Kim Yo Jong if she had had hard time "due to cold weather", to which she replied it had been "okay because you... were kind enough to care", the Yonhap news agency reported, quoting pool reports.

Kim's special envoy, his sister Kim Yo Jong, delivered the verbal invitation during a lunch meeting with Moon at Seoul's Blue House, spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said.

Abe said he had confirmed with Moon the need to maintain strong pressure on North Korea to get it to abandon its nuclear and missile programmes, reiterating Tokyo's stance that "talk for the sake of talk is pointless".

"An early resumption of dialogue between the United States and the North is needed also for the development of the South-North Korean relationship", he said, according to his spokesman.

A renewed feud over the issue has frayed ties even as America's two key Asian allies confront the challenge of North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes. The North Korean orchestra will return home on Monday after their second and last performance on Sunday.

North Korean state media broadcast the parade, showing what appeared to be the Hwasong-14 and Hwasong-15 - the ICBMs test-launched previous year for the first time.

Pence avoided public criticism of Moon, congratulating South Korea on hosting the games and pledging continued support in addressing the North's nuclear threat. A top North Korean official seemed to rule out a potential meeting with USA officials in the North's state-run media on Thursday, but Pence suggested to reporters that it was still a possibility.
