The exuberant, indefatigable actress-singer Nanette Fabray, a Tony and Emmy victor, a star of Vincente Minnelli's golden-age musical "The Band Wagon" and a longtime presence on television, most notably on "The Hollywood Squares", died Thursday at her Palos Verdes, Calif., home, according to the New York Times.

Unlike some actors of the 1950s, Fabray eagerly embraced the relatively new medium of television rather than consider it second-fiddle to a film career. She later returned to the Rialto in 1962 to star with Robert Ryan in "Mr. President", from Lindsay Crouse and Irving Berlin, and drew another nomination for best actress in a musical.

Coca and Caesar had delighted audiences on Caesar's "Your Show of Shows" from 1950 to 1954. "She was what the French call a soubrette: she could sing, dance, act, and look lovely". She later said her representatives, without her permission or knowledge, had caused the dispute by insisting that she be granted equal billing and pay.

Fabray portrayed a playwright modeled after Betty Comden and is a part of one of the film's most memorable numbers, "Triplets", in which she, Astaire, and Buchanan portray infants with adult-sized heads and bodies, but stubby baby legs. Their sketches presaged the family-focused situation comedies that would dominate prime time for decades.

Also during that time, Fabray appeared on many classic sitcoms and variety shows.

One was "The Dick Van Dyke Show", in which Mary Tyler Moore co-starred as suburban housewife Laura Petrie.

After starting out in Hollywood, making her screen debut at the age of 19 as a lady-in-waiting to Bette Davis' Elizabeth I in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Fabray found major success on Broadway. Moore died in 2017.

MacDougall also created the short-lived 1961 NBC series The Nanette Fabray Show, on which his wife starred as a woman who marries a widower with two kids. She grew up in Hollywood where her mother encouraged her to get into show business, the LA Times reports. Told she would eventually lose her hearing, she studied sign language, but four surgeries managed to fix the problem.

Fabray had otosclerosis, a disease of the bones of the middle and inner ear. She was a member of the National Council on the Handicapped.

Born Ruby Bernadette Nanette Fabares, the actress later adapted her name for the stage. Her father, Raul, was a train engineer; her mother, the former Lily McGovern, took in boarders. She had an older brother and sister, and her parents divorced when she was about 8. One doctor predicted she'd lose her hearing in five years. She started appearing as an extra in movies as a young girl, and, as a teenager, landed a six-month contract at Warner Bros. "I could nearly read Sid's mind", she said.
