In addition to West Virginia, the states where at least half the respondents approved of Trump included several western states (Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Alaska), several southern states (Oklahoma, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas) and two Midwestern states (North and South Dakota).
According to the RealClearPolitics average, Trump is at 40.4 percent approval and 56.3 percent disapproval.
Only the District of Columbia gave Trump a lower rating than Vermont - with just 6 percent of respondents approving of his job performance.
The findings signal Trump's best outing in a Monmouth approval poll since the third month of his presidency, when 43 percent registered approval and 46 disapproval last March.
The boost in his approval rating isn't the only good news for Trump more than a month after he signed his signature tax legislation into law.
The 32 percent approval rating Trump logged in the December survey was the lowest for any major poll since Trump was elected. A recently released CNN poll also shows the president's approval rating increased from 35 percent in December to 40 percent in January.
While approval for the tax cuts has risen, most Americans still think they will have to pay more taxes due to the reforms.
Trump is a historically unpopular president.
Now, 47 per cent of registered voters said they would choose a generic Democratic candidate over a Republican.
38 percent say Trump should be impeached, while 57 percent say he should not.
