Judge rules life support for toddler can be withdrawn

The parents of a seriously ill toddler have lost a legal fight with doctors about whether to keep the boy on life support.

Specialists at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool had asked the judge to rule that life-support treatment could end.

Alfie's parents, Kate James and Tom Evans, both in their 20s, wanted treatment to continue.

'Alfie's need now is for good quality palliative care, ' he said.

Alfie's mother had left the hearing before Mr Justice Hayden and wept outside.

Earlier this month the hospital told the Liverpool Civil and Family Court that Alfie was in a "semi-vegetative state" and yesterday a London High Court judge ruled that further treatment would harm Alfie's "future dignity".

Delivering the ruling in the High Court in London, he said he had reached his conclusion with great sadness.

Rebekah Vardy, Jamie Lomas and Dennis Wise today met Alfie Evans at Alderhey Hospital where doctors believe his life support machine should be turned off.

"No-one, I repeat no-one is taking my boy away from me and they're not violating his rights or mine", Mr Evans said.

Medics argued continuing to provide treatment to the 21-month-old is "unkind, unfair and inhumane".

"This decision I appreciate will be devastating news to Alfie's parents", he added.

"He requires peace, quiet and privacy in order that he may conclude his life as he has lived it, with dignity", he said.

He praised Alfie's parents for exploring every avenue to keep their son alive and leaving no stone unturned.

Mr Justice Hayden said scans which had been ordered by him, and carried out earlier this month, showed Alfie's condition was "ultimately fatal".

Speaking outside the court following the verdict, Tom Evans - surrounded by 30 supporters from "Alfie's Army" who had gathered for the hearing - said his son had been "sentenced to the death penalty". He needs a chance.
