The group is seeking to sue the New Zealanders under the 2011 anti-boycott law, adopted by Israel as a part of its fight against the global Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

An Israeli NGO is suing two New Zealanders for allegedly influencing Lorde to cancel a planned show in Tel Aviv in June, in what is believed to be first lawsuit filed under Israel's new anti-boycott law.

The 2011 law opens the door to civil lawsuits against anyone calling for a boycott against Israel, including of lands it has occupied, if that call could knowingly lead to a boycott. They want £9,200 in damages for each spurned concert goer.

Responding to the letter, the 21-year-old singer tweeted: "Noted!"

"I've received an overwhelming number of messages & letters and have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show", Lorde stated in a release distributed by the Israeli promoters in Tel Aviv responsible for producing her show. "Thank u for educating me i am learning all the time too".

In an interview with an Israeli website after Lorde announced her plans to skip out on the Tel Aviv performance, Sachs said she was surprised her letter had such an impact.

The girls then chose to write a letter to the worldwide star and also contacted Israeli attorney Nitzana Darshan-Leitner from Shurat HaDin Israel Law Center, a Jewish human rights organization.

Recording artist Lorde performs onstage during MusiCares Person of the Year honoring Fleetwood Mac at Radio City Music Hall on January 26, 2018 in New York City. In total, the lawsuit seeks up to $13,000 in damages.

The law extends to any country, so the fact that Sachs and Abu-Shanab are New Zealanders is ostensibly irrelevant.

Lorde was met with both support and criticism after her cancellation.

"They want to say on a personal and an worldwide level, that those who boycott Israel or make a call to boycott Israel will be responsible and they have to pay". "We asked Lorde to not break the boycott and to not support the occupation of Palestinian lands, the destruction of Palestinian lands, homes and lives and I am proud of her courageous response that testifies that she has an open progressive mind, is concerned about social justice". A few days later she cancelled the concert.
