House Intelligence Committee Votes Unanimously To Release Democratic Memo

Patty Aguilar | 07 February, 2018, 00:08

Schiff's comments came shortly before the House Intelligence Committee is expected to vote to release a Democratic memo from Schiff, rebutting claims from the GOP memo released Friday.

The Intelligence panel voted Monday evening, unanimously, in favor of releasing a Democratic memo rebutting one compiled by Chairman Devin Nunes, made public last week, that alleges senior law enforcement officials improperly secured warrants in the Russian Federation election meddling investigation.

After the vote on Monday night, Schiff told reporters that the committee also agreed to send the Democratic memo to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department to play a role in the Executive Branch approval process.

The Democrat memo will now go for a legal review and national security review, led by the White House Counsel's Office, according to Shah.

Before Monday's vote, Trump charged in a tweet that Schiff "leaves closed committee hearings to illegally leak confidential information" and "must be stopped" - suggesting that the president may decide not to allow the Democrats' assertions to be made public.

Adam Schiff said Bannon's lawyer told the committee he is barred from talking about matters during the presidential transition, his time at the White House and communications with President Donald Trump since he left in August.

Mr Nunes was asked during a January 29 committee meeting whether he had coordinated the memo with the White House.

"The Democratic memo should be available for members of Congress to read, and I intend on reading it to understand both perspectives", said U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-19.

Instead, his Committee voted along party-lines last week to block the Democratic response. The memo, though indirectly, acknowledges that the FBI's initial investigation stemmed from a tip by an Australian diplomat who was told by another Trump campaign staff member, George Papadopoulos, that Russians had compiled dirt on Clinton and were willing to share it with the Trump campaign. His dossier was "essential" to the application for electronic surveillance on Page, the committee's memo said.

Schiff tweeted in kind Monday, advising Trump to turn "off the TV" help "solve the funding crisis".

Some 73 percent of Republicans agreed that 'members of the FBI and Department of Justice are working to delegitimize Trump through politically motivated investigations'.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee is slamming the release of a congressional memo that alleges FBI surveillance abuses in an investigation into the Trump campaign's Russian Federation ties.

Representative Adam Schiff, the committee's ranking Democrat, said the Democratic memo "will help inform the public of the many distortions and inaccuracies in the majority memo". Others, like House Oversight Committee chairman Trey Gowdy, say the Mueller probe and the memo are separate.

Representative Devin Nunes, a man of tremendous courage and grit, may someday be recognized as a Great American Hero for what he has exposed and what he has had to endure!

Democrats feared Trump would use the memo as a pretext for firing senior officials and subvert the investigation, led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and possible coordination between Trump's camp and Moscow.

We have an update now on a story we've been following today about dueling memos from the House Intelligence Committee. But it furthered the presidents unprecedented effort to undermine public credibility in the criminal justice system that is investigating Russian interference in the election.

LUCAS: This is going to follow the same process as we saw with the Republican memo.

Nunes has made it a practice to attack independent counsel Robert Mueller, as well as the FBI, in an attempt to derail investigations into collusion by the Trump campaign. The FBI said last Wednesday that it has "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy".
