All told, the series has collected roughly $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, including $98.1 million in global ticket sales over the weekend for "Fifty Shades Freed".

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as Anastasia Steel and Christian Grey in "Fifty Shades Freed".

Fifty Shades Freed is the third and final installment of the erotic romance Fifty Shades Trilogy by British author E. L. James.

Fifty Shades of Grey opened to a shocking $85.2 million in 2015, and the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, brought home a little more than half that with $46.6 million in its first weekend previous year. The fanbase that propelled the novel to become the bestselling book of all time, plus the rest of us who were just curious to see how they pulled it off (so to speak), led the film to earn almost $100 million in its opening weekend when it arrived in 2015. While the figure trails the $46.6 million attained by "Fifty Shades Darker", it is still enough for a comfortable #1 bow on this week's chart.

Clint Eastwood had a tougher weekend with "The 15:17 to Paris".

Sony's animated adventure comedy film "Peter Rabbit" opened in second place with an estimated 25 million dollars in its first weekend.

The weekend's third new release, Warner Bros'. thriller The 15:17 to Paris, will pull into the station with an estimated $12.6 million from 3,042 theaters - in line with analysts' modest expectations and good for the No. 3 spot. The film features voice roles played by James Corden, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, and Elizabeth Debicki, and live action roles played by Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, and Sam Neill.

Filling out the top five are two holdovers that have demonstrated impressive staying power: Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (last week's No. 1 movie), with about $9.8 million, and Fox's The Greatest Showman, with about $6.4 million.

It's not just the biggest 2018 opener to date, or the number one movie in America right now, but Fifty Shades also took home $98.1 million worldwide from 57 total markets, and knocked down first place finishes in 54 of those 57 markets.
