Why North Korea is eager to talk to the South

Trump says he would talk with Kim Jong Un Why North Korea is eager to talk to the South

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un", Mr. Trump said in an interview Thursday with The Wall Street Journal.

In his New Year's address, Kim warned of "a nuclear button on the desk in [his] office" that could launch a strike anywhere in the USA, but also spoke of easing tensions between North and South Korea "to create a peaceful environment", prompting a series of high-level talks between the two countries.

Putin made the comments in a meeting with Russian editors-in-chief in Moscow on Thursday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un speaks during the Second Plenum of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang October 8, 2017.

'He is already a shrewd and mature politician, ' Putin said.

None of that, however, means North Korea has any intention of slowing its drive for more powerful nuclear missiles and warheads, specifically those that would allow it to hit the US.

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump suggested he has developed a positive relationship with North Korea's leader despite their mutual public insults, signaling a possible new openness to diplomacy after months of escalating tensions over the rogue state's nuclear program.

Russian Federation and China both advocate for a freeze-for-freeze plan that would see North Korea halt its testing of ballistic missiles and nuclear devices in return for The U.S.' freezing of joint military exercises.

North Korea boycotted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but it agreed in the talks to send athletes and officials to the upcoming games.

Mr Trump said: "Who knows where it leads?".

Putin reiterated that dialogue with North Korea was warranted, and said Kim now wanted to calm the situation.

The Kremlin strongman congratulated the North Korean dictator, saying he had won the latest stand-off with the US and South Korea.

While Putin referenced the range of North Korea's Hwasong-15 Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Russia had previously disputed DPRK claims that its other long-range missile - the Hwasong-14 - was indeed an ICBM as well.
