The comment was "clearly" racist, said Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for AU chief Moussa Faki.

President Donald Trump defended himself Sunday in the wake of recent disparaging comments about Haiti and African nations, declaring that "I am not a racist".

"The African Union Mission wishes to express its infuriation, disappointment and outrage over the unfortunate comment made by Mr. Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, which remarks dishonor the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity", the African Union mission to the United States said in a blistering statement.

"African countries, and sometimes our leaders, do not exactly deal with the problems of the worst-off, that's what makes people immigrate".

Sen. Dick Durbin of IL, the only Democrat at Thursday's meeting, said Trump had indeed said what he was reported to have said. Lindsey Graham confronted the president during the meeting about his comments.

"I don't think this will just blow over", said Peter Lewis, director of African Studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.

"He said, 'Put me down for wanting more Europeans to come to this country".

But Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican who has been critical of Trump, said Democrats were serious about a bipartisan deal on immigration. The president has denied using that language, and on Sunday said he was "not a racist" in response to the uproar over the remarks, which were widely reported and confirmed to CNN by a source briefed on the meeting.

The UN has also branded as racist, the reported remark branding Haiti, El Salvador and unspecified African nations as "shithole countries". "That I can tell you". Trump also questioned why the United States should admit more Haitians. Trump announced past year that he will end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, unless lawmakers come up with a solution by March. About 700,000 people are covered by DACA. "I think that there are people that are looking for an apology".

Trump said Democrats aren't for securing the border or stopping the flow of drugs, but are for taking money away from the military. "It doesn't change what they do", Goldstein said.

He insisted the White House was "ready, willing and able to make a deal on DACA".
