Trump cancels London trip for embassy opening

"Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for 'peanuts, ' only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars".

But Trump said his decision, announced in a late-night tweet, was due to concerns about the embassy's move from the elite Mayfair district to a far less fashionable area of London south of the Thames River.

Officials decided it would be impossible to retrofit the ageing modernist building, opened in 1960, with the security needed in the post-9/11 world.

Despite the president publicly blaming predecessor Barack Obama, the United States embassy said the plan to finance the project was developed in 2007, at a time when George W Bush was in the White House.

Mr Trump also criticised the location of the new building in Vauxhall, south London, as an "off location", adding: "Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!"

However, the opponents threatening of mass protests on Trump enters the country, is being cited as a major reason behind the cancellation of the latter's plan.

A Downing Street spokesman said Mrs May would tell Mr Trump he is welcome in London.

A Trump visit has been on the cards since British Prime Minister Theresa May visited the United States a few days after Trump's inauguration previous year.

Mrs May controversially extended the offer of a state visit, officially on behalf of the Queen, when she became the first world leader to meet Mr Trump in the White House following his inauguration a year ago.

"We were only at the embassy for about 25 minutes, but there were some immediate reactions", she said.

"The US is one of our oldest and most valued allies and our strong and deep partnership will endure", the spokesman said.

The exchange prompted further calls to dump the visit.

"London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted Trump had "got the message" that he was not welcome, referring to the backlash over the Queen's invitation". In December, Ambassador Woody Johnson said he was looking forward to welcoming the president when he visited.

However, London's mayor Sadiq Khan, who has been a target of Mr Trump's twitter tirades, said the president had "got the message" that he was not welcome in the United Kingdom capital.

"We will not allow US-UK relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall". Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower had his headquarters on the square during World War II.

"We are strongly committed in the special relationship between our two countries and we are confident the new embassy will provide the necessary platform to continue our cooperation".

But the American presence has not been appreciated by the embassy's neighbors in recent years.

Labour lawmaker David Lammy, who had vowed to lead a protest against Trump if he visited, said the USA president was "too scared of us Londoners, who don't want him darkening our door".
