Trump administration resumes accepting DACA renewals

Bipartisan Group of Senators Tries to Forge DACA Deal Bipartisan Group of Senators Tries to Forge DACA Deal
Patty Aguilar | 14 January, 2018, 12:53

A bipartisan group of Republican and Democratic senators working to find a compromise to coincide with a looming spending bill vote on January 19, announced Thursday they had reached a tentative agreement on an immigration bill that addresses several issues, including border security and allowing young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children and known as dreamers to permanently legalize their status.

In the wake of a firestorm sparked by President Donald Trump's Thursday comments slamming immigrants from "s-hole" countries, the president weighed in on Twitter Friday, appearing to defend the "tough" language he used at an Oval Office meeting. So if a DACA fix is going to pass, it may happen in a very rare circumstance where most of the votes in the House come from the minority party, the Democrats, which means Democratic leaders are going to have to round up votes from members who oppose Trump's border wall and numerous proposed changes to the legal immigration process.

Then, in the first week of 2018, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump clarified what he had in mind: $18 billion for his "big, attractive wall".

In September, Attorney General Jeff Sessions gave six months' notice of the Trump administration's intention to terminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the Obama administration program that granted work permits to Dreamers if they met certain requirements, including clean criminal records. The White House rejected the plan and asked the senators to keep working on a new proposal.

Local immigration advocates are breathing a sigh of relief after a federal judge ruled against a controversial White House effort. "Wall was not properly funded, Chain & Lottery were made worse and U.S. would be forced to take large numbers of people from high crime....".

As criticism of the President grew, Mr. Trump was holding a ceremony to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior - the federal holiday which bears his name is on Monday.

The details of the deal - which was agreed upon by Sens. It doesn't share any of the values we have been talking about all along. "It's the only game in town", Flake said. "There is no other bill".

As news of Trump's comments spread, even jaded congressional insiders expressed shock. Lindsey Graham, who attended the immigration meeting and confirmed the reports about the president's comment, saying they were "basically accurate".

If we can stay focused on that, I would argue that's the more important thing to focus on, not what was or was not said in a meeting.

South Carolina Republican Sen.

"However, we caution against introducing unrelated, unnecessary, or controversial elements of immigration policy - especially those that jeopardize the sanctity of families or unaccompanied children - into the bipartisan search for a just and humane solution for the 'Dreamers, '" he said.

A federal judge in San Francisco has issued a nationwide injunction that temporarily blocks the phase-out of a program protecting immigrants brought to the country illegally as minors.

Trump says the wall is not "properly funded".

But that agreement was cast into doubt the same day when a firestorm erupted after reports surfaced that President Donald Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers over an immigration bill, asked why the USA was accepting immigrants from "s-thole countries" referring reportedly to immigrants from Africa.

The agreement among senators came as more than 100 corporate CEOs urged Congress to "act immediately and pass a permanent bipartisan legislative solution to enable Dreamers who are now living, working, and contributing to our communities to continue doing so".
