On Monday, the PM's reshuffle plans were derailed as Education Secretary Justine Greening rejected the work and pensions role and quit the Cabinet and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt apparently refused to budge after turning down the business role.

There was little that was dramatic in Theresa May's reshuffle of her Cabinet on Monday, though the British Prime Minister has made the underlying objective obvious enough ~ to add more power to her elbow before the Brexit negotiations are in full flow.

Sajid Javid is also staying in position, though his brief changes from Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to Housing, Communities and Local Government, making him the first United Kingdom minister with a housing department title since the 1970s.

Ms Greening replaced Nicky Morgan as Education Secretary on July 14 2016 after Theresa May won the Conservative Party leadership election and became Prime Minister.

Instead, former justice secretary David Lidington has been made Cabinet Office minister and will effectively fill Mr Green's shoes, standing in for Mrs May at PMQs.

The reshuffle - the biggest of Mrs May's tenure - was prompted by the resignation of Damian Green after he admitted lying over pornography on his office computer.

Theresa May's new Cabinet has five times more privately-educated people than in the general population, analysis has revealed.

She'll chair the first meeting of her new cabinet on Tuesday, as she continues a reshuffle of the junior ranks of government. She, more than any other minister, has been vehemently opposed to Mrs May's divisive policy towards grammar schools.

Mr Lidington was also named Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, replacing Sir Patrick McLoughlin, who was sacked as Conservative chairman following criticism of his role in the party's poor performance in last year's snap election. With Boris Johnson, David Davis and Philip Hammond untouched, Theresa May has managed to effect a deft intra-party exercise.

Former work and pensions minister Esther McVey, who temporarily lost her seat between 2015 and 2017, returns to head the department. He was replaced by culture secretary Karen Bradley, who will take on the task of attempting to resolve the impasse in the province between the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein which has left the devolved government at Stormont without an administration for a year.

The UK government's accident-prone streak continued in the new year as British Prime Minister Theresa May's weaker than expected Cabinet reshuffle began with an erroneous tweet from the Conservative Party's official Twitter account wrongly announcing the party's new chairman.

Theresa May cleared out nearly all long-standing government figures who had served from 2010 in the second day of her reshuffle.

Claire Perry will also be able to attend the Cabinet as a new Business Minister.

James Brokenshire resigned as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, citing ill-health.

Penny Mordaunt remains in post as International Development Secretary.

David Mundell stays on as Scottish Secretary.

Baroness Evans of Bowes Park stays on as Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords.
