The Swedish police today confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man as a result of an explosion at the Varby Gard subway station in this capital.

Two people have been seriously injured after a hand grenade exploded outside a metro station in Stockholm.

The station has been closed off pending a bomb squad investigation.

"There was something on the ground that the man picked up, and then it exploded", Sven-Erik Olsson of the Stockholm police told the TT news agency.

The man died later in hospital.

Police declined to confirm the Aftonbladet report, for which the newspaper named no sources, but said they do not believe the incident was terrorism-related.

"But we will have to wait for the technical investigation", the spokesman said, adding that a murder investigation had been launched.

"Someone has used explosives".
