Steve Bannon subpoenaed by Mueller

Bannon Lewandowski to Testify This Week Steve Bannon subpoenaed by Mueller

A lawyer who represented Bannon in an appearance before the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on Tuesday could not be immediately reached.

"This was unprecedented in all the interviews that we have done".

Bannon was on Capitol Hill testifying before the House Intelligence Committee when the news broke that Mueller had issued the subpoena for the now-estranged associate of President Donald Trump to testify before a grand jury.

The former head of the right-wing Breitbart News told the House panel that he was instructed by the White House not to talk about his time on the Trump transition team or his time in the West Wing.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders insisted "no one" had discouraged Bannon from transparency.

Trump has denied wrongdoing, denounced the investigation as a witch hunt, and derided "Sloppy Steve" Bannon for discussing things he doesn't know anything about.

Cobb has maintained an optimistic view of the Mueller investigation, which is looking into campaign collusion as well as obstruction of justice.

The subpoena is a sign that Bannon is not personally the focus of the investigation.

When he was elected as Donald Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon said that his election victory had ushered in a "new political order". It was revealed last week that Mueller told Trump's lawyers of his desire to question the president as part of his investigation at some point. A spokeswoman for Bannon did not respond to requests for comment.

Regardless, Bannon is an important figure in Trump's drive to the White House - and he may have interesting things to tell Mueller.

In reporter Michael Wolff's exposé Fire and Fury, Bannon is quoted at-length calling the meeting "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".

Bannon, a champion of Trump's "America First" agenda, was among the Republican's closest aides during the 2016 election campaign, the presidential transition and his first months in office.

That made him the first person from Mr Trump's inner circle to receive a grand jury subpoena from Mr Mueller in the probe. The Times reported, however, that even Bannon's secondhand knowledge could be compared to testimony from those Mueller has already interviewed. But he noted that Mueller has "ultimate authority" to subpoena anyone to appear before a grand jury and compel them to testify.

Bannon had been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in Mueller's probe of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and any ties with President Donald Trump's campaign, according to a person familiar with the matter.
