Spectre and Meltdown: What We Now Know

Nvidia updates but claims to be unaffected by Sceptre Meltdown and Spectre chip flaw timeline

After the article was published, Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group, issued a statement addressing the matter.

In the meantime, Microsoft this week said it has "temporarily paused" patches for Windows customers running AMD processors after some users reported seeing the "blue screen of death" after the update was applied. Intel are promising updates for 90% of their CPUs introduced in the past five years by January 15, and "ongoing security assurance", outlining their plans to fund further ongoing security research, and to share any potential side-channel attack breakthroughs the company may have. "We are also working directly with data center customers to discuss the issue". Intel needs to straighten this up and the sooner the better. The company believes this issue can be solved with operating system patches.

The cause of the issue is now unknown, but Intel has revealed it's working around the clock to assemble and distribute a patch - though there's no telling how long it will take to arrive.

Huang's comments illustrate how technology sellers from cloud-based datacenter providers to anti-virus companies are scrambling to guard against flaws disclosed last week in chips made by Intel and others.

Unlike many had predicted, Meltdown-the Intel-only vulnerability that is fixed by forcing the CPU to reload its TLB when running a kernel process-wasn't the biggest headache for Google. Red Hat put out an advisory to customers stating its patches to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel may reduce performance by 8% to 19% on highly cached random memory.

While many companies are working hard to patch Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities in their systems, Google says that it has already deployed anti-Spectre and Meltdown solutions to its products, and more interestingly, users didn't even notice everything happened. Vulnerability to Variant 2 has not been demonstrated on AMD processors to date. "They are not affected by these security issues", he shared. "Internal policy and procedure changes, especially in how Intel communicates to partners and customers must change, and the public acknowledgement of that will serve as a guidepost for internal decisions to support that".

Intel has arguably been worst affected of all the major chip designers, with CPUs going back to 1995 affected.

"The pledge is likely brand management more than a real thing that will markedly increase security".
