John Engler says he won't be political as interim president of Michigan State University, as it deals with scathing criticism over disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar.

The Michigan State University board of trustees on Wednesday tapped former three-term Gov. John Engler to lead his alma mater through a turbulent crisis of public confidence amid the fallout of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. But some of Nassar's victims criticized the choice, saying that the university needs someone more distant from the university's establishment to truly root out the problems at the institution. The Democrat and Michigan State graduate will be named as a senior adviser.

In an Ingham County, Michigan, court over the past two weeks, more than 150 women spoke out about Nassar's two decades of abuse.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina signed Nassar's fate after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual assault and admitted to using his trusted position as a doctor to assault and molest girls under the guise of treatment.

While the "Outside the Lines" report does not connect these allegations against both the football and basketball programs with the Nassar case, it does raise questions about how the university handles sexual assault reports as a whole.

One of the Michigan State Athletic Department's most visible sponsors requested the removal of its logo from a backdrop used at MSU press conferences, Tony Paul of The Detroit News reports.

Michigan State is named as a co-defendant in civil lawsuits filed by more than 150 women, many of whom claim that coaches, athletic trainers and others at the school ignored complaints about Nassar for almost two decades. "It also sends the message to survivors of sexual assault that their experiences are not significant to administrators, prosecutors and others with authority, thus discouraging future survivors from reporting assaults". The group's entire board of directors is resigning under pressure from the United States Olympic Committee.

He said Saturday that he didn't need advice about how to handle the investigation from the board due to their conduct during the situation.

In addition to Strampel, Klages, Lemmen and all eight Board of Trustees members, the following people have also been asked to hand over email and text communications involving Nassar: Simon, Hollis and Bill Beekman, the VP and secretary of the Board of Trustees; trainers Lianna Hadden and Destiny Teachnor-Hauk; and physicians Jeffrey Kovan and Lisa DeStefano.

After the creation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in 1974, universities have intentionally misinterpreted the law to cover up information, the prevalence of sexual assault for instance, that could potentially make universities look bad. The release of that story coincided with longtime athletic director Mark Hollis' announcement Friday that he had made a decision to retire. A member of the MSU Faculty Senate proposed a vote of no confidence, which drew applause from the students in the room. "I take solace that many victims have indicated that the opportunity to confront Nassar is a step toward healing", she said. While he was surprised that Engler was the choice, given the partisan make-up of the board, "I think he'll do a great job".
