North Korea and South Korea have agreed to hold working-level talks at the Tongil Pavilion on the North Korean side of the truce village of Panmunjom on January 15, South Korea's unification ministry said in a statement.

The South's delegates include senior officials from the state-run Korean Symphony Orchestra, raising the prospect of groups from both sides of the border Demilitarized Zone performing together-another top North Korean act is the State Merited Chorus, a military choir.

Notable is the North's calls came out one day before the two Koreas are scheduled to hold vice-ministerial talks on the North's participation in the PyeongChang Olympics.

Tensions have spiralled in recent months after North Korea held multiple missile launches and its sixth and most powerful nuclear test - purportedly of a hydrogen bomb.

During an era of detente in the 2000s, their athletes marched together under a "unification flag" depicting their peninsula during the opening and closing ceremonies of nine global sports events, including the Olympics and Asian Games, but they failed to produce a joint team again.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un's annual New Year address was a mixture of good and bad.

With the clock ticking before the event begins on February 9, the Koreas will also meet the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland on Saturday.

Since its first stage debut in 2012, the band is hugely popular at home and has been dubbed by outsiders as "North Korea's only girl group" for its Western-style performances featuring women in mini-skirts and high heels dancing and singing odes to Kim.

They are most likely to cross the border by land, as travelling by air or ship could violate worldwide sanctions imposed on the North.
