The African Union, a group representing the continent's countries, and African ambassadors to the United Nations sharply denounced US President Donald Trump's reference to African nations as "s***holes" and called on him to retract his statement and apologize.

Africans have reacted angrily after United States (US) President Donald Trump reportedly referred to their nations as "shithole countries", with many accusing the US president of racism and ignorance.

"The African Union mission to the United Nations is extremely appalled at, and strongly condemns the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks attributed to the U.S. president as widely reported by the media", Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Ghana's ambassador to the United Nations, said on Friday.

Trump denied on Friday using such derogatory language, but he was widely condemned in many African countries and in Haiti and El Salvador, and by worldwide rights organizations.

Mr Trump's uncouth statement has shocked the world with U.S. diplomats around the world being summoned for formal reproach in countries they serve.

Trump's allies have argued that the controversy over his remarks is overblown.

The comment was "clearly" racist, said Ms Ebba Kalondo, spokeswoman for African Union chief Moussa Faki.

Trump's alleged statement also prompted outrage from the African Union (AU), the organization that includes all the 54 African UN states plus Western Sahara, which is not recognized by the UN.

"For once, we are all on the same page", an ambassador said.

"This is particularly surprising", she added, "as the United States of America remains a global example of how migration gave birth to a nation built on strong values of diversity and opportunity".

U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, said in an interview, "It's incomprehensible that these words came out of the mouth of the president of the United States of America, a country that was founded on being free from discrimination and treating people fairly and having people come here, the land of the free".

I am shocked by President Trump's comments on Haiti and Africa. "Haitians should not be seen as a bunch of immigrants who come to the United States to exploit U.S. resources".

"I reject them and condemn vigorously".

The US president reportedly made the remarks at a White House meeting on immigration last week. Others present said that it was.

"Trump has always been a racist, only a racist can use such foul language", said Nancy Mulenga, a student at the University of Zambia.

Prominent Kenyan commentator Patrick Gathara said that Mr Trump's words were nothing new.
