President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that a looming government shutdown would hurt the military.

His visit will be closed to the press but he will down with Department of Defense Secretary James Mattis along with other Senior military leadership members as well as Vice President Mike Pence. He said on his way in that he was there "for our military" and said if a shutdown happens, the "worst thing is what happens to our military". "And we're never letting our military lose at any point".

Trump spoke as he arrived at the Pentagon for a meeting Thursday. "Our tax cuts and our tax reform has turned out to be far greater than anybody ever anticipated, and I'm sure the Democrats would like to blunt that by shutting down government", he said.

Ryan said he spoke to President Donald Trump and said Trump fully supports the House measure, despite tweeting earlier Thursday that a popular children's health insurance program should not be part of the short-term budget agreement.

The White House isn't immediately responding to questions about the tweet.

Congress has until March 5 to find a solution for DACA, but Democrats want to tie it to a spending bill since it is must-pass legislation.

"Our military has to be the best in the world, by far". He added, "If the country shuts down, which could very well be, the budget should be handled a lot differently than it's been handled over the last long period of time, many years". 'And when we finish, there won't be anything like it.

So Trump's rhetoric doesn't match what might actually happen.

Ryan insisted soon after at a news conference that Republicans could pass a bill on their own.

In a shutdown, "the group that loses big would be the military", Trump said. That is not in anyone's interest, ' he said. So I think we should call their bluff. That would be an indication the government is open, even if he signs the actual bill later on.

Shah said in a statement that attempted to end confusion on Trump's position on the spending resolution that the president would prefer Congress pass a deal that goes beyond February but he will accept another continuing resolution in order to prevent a shutdown.

"This is the ninth straight year with a continuing resolution", Dunford said.

"With the shutdown situation we might have in front of us ... you're going from 60 percent efficiency to the shutdown", she said, referring to the fact that the Pentagon has been facing budget uncertainties for months.
