Putin and trump GETTYBoth the US and Russia are increasing their nuclear capabilities

At the same time, the US has sought to push back against North Korea's development of its nuclear arsenal and ballistic missiles, leading an worldwide pressure campaign in an effort to force Pyongyang to abandon its plans.

According to the Journal, proposals include a new low yield nuclear warhead usable by the Trident missiles deployed onboard US Navy subs, along with a separate, totally new, nuclear-armed cruise missile, also deployable at sea. The report is based on a new Defense Department nuclear strategy review, which says the proposed new nuclear weapons would be to counter Russian Federation and China. "The United States must be capable of developing and deploying new capabilities, if necessary, to deter, assure, achieve USA objectives if deterrence fails, and hedge against uncertainty", the draft plan reportedly said.

The U.S.is planning to develop two new nuclear weapons, including a "low-yield" warhead, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Modesto police officer seriously injured in crash involving DUI suspect
Bettencourt said the CHP was attempting to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved. Although the male officer suffered major injuries, they are not considered life-threatening.

HuffPost published an unclassified draft copy of the review last week, though the Pentagon has said that the draft is "pre-decisional".

There's an otherworldliness to the concept, because nuclear weapons are psychologically a breed apart. In October, NBC News reported that he expressed interest in a tenfold increase in the country's arsenal, which has declined precipitously from its peak in the 1960s.

Other themes addressed in the draft NPR include the US government's support for NATO, use of diplomatic agreements in risk reduction efforts and support for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization Preparatory Committee, according to the report. The Journal reports that a full nuclear modernization could eat up about 6.4 percent of the Defense Department's budget, more than double what it now spends on nuclear weapons, and that "if the Pentagon doesn't secure the spending increases it anticipates, this could heighten the competition between nuclear and nonnuclear programs for budgetary resources".
