Despite the Trump administration's stated goal of focusing on deporting immigrants with violent criminal offenses, Ragbir's supporters suspect he was targeted by ICE officials for his activism. Eighteen people were arrested in that protest, according to New York City Patch.

Ydanis Rodríguez (D-Manhattan) and Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn), who both hold council seats, were arrested in Foley Square while protesting the arrest of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist.

"Ravi Ragbir means everything to this city", New Sanctuary Coalition Co-Chair Rev. Kaji Dousa told Democracy Now! on Thursday. "Today, after more than two decades of living in this country, he was detained by ICE and removed in an ambulance", said Williams in a tweet confirming his arrest.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained immigrant rights activist Ravi Ragbir on Thursday after a routine check-in in New York City.

Ministers and supporters regularly went to check-ins with Ragbir.

Rauner vows not to close Quincy veterans home after Legionnaires' outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a new report that the possibility of future cases can not be eliminated. A variety of agencies will take part in the hearing, including the Department of Veterans' Affairs and members of the CDC.

Mr. Ragbir, 53, became a permanent resident of the United States in 1994.

"A 15-year green card holder, Ravi was detained and ordered deported in 2006 by an immigration judge - without a hearing - based on a conviction for fraud, which he is now seeking to vacate, based on factual and legal errors in his trial", the statement added. "We need your help to secure his release & halt his deportation", said a statement by New Sanctuary Movement. "We call for him to be released from detention and granted a new stay of removal". Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, both of NY. He was placed into removal proceedings in 2006 and spent 22 months in immigration detention before being released in February 2008.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley also issued a statement after ICE detained Ragbir.

"In each review", the statement continues, "the courts have uniformly held that Mr. Ragbir does not have a legal basis to remain in the U.S. In an exercise of discretion, the agency had previously allowed him to remain free from custody with periodic check-ins, while his case was under court review". ICE justified its decision and said he will remain in custody pending removal to Trinidad. Mayor Bill de Blasio's spokesman said the mayor has been briefed on the protest, adding, "the area is covered extensively by cameras and we'll be reviewing the footage to get to the bottom of what happened". Just previous year, Ravi was recognized with the Immigrant Excellence Award by the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, given to those who show "deep commitment to the enhancement of their community".
