New Study on Pop Music Highlights Massive Disparity in Female Representation

Women Are Hugely Underrepresented in the Music Industry New Report Finds New Study on Pop Music Highlights Massive Disparity in Female Representation

Led by Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Marc Choueiti, and Dr. Katherine Pieper, "Inclusion in the Recording Studio?" paints a troubling picture of the state of popular music by analyzing data from the 600 songs that appeared on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 chart from 2012 through 2017. Women were most likely to be nommed in the best new artist category or for song of the year.

The voices of women are missing from popular music.

The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released their inaugural study of gender and race/ethnicity representation in pop music this week, and their findings show just how skewed the current gender balance is.

"This is another example of what we see across the ecosystem of entertainment: Women are pushed to the margins or excluded from the creative process." he added.

The study also found the ratio of female producers in the industry severely lacking. Some 98% of the producers were men, a ratio of 49.1 to 1 that was consistent over the study period.

Dr. Smith said that her team planned to undertake further studies of the music industry, including looking at the women in the executive ranks and the "pipeline" of employment in the business. The report also revealed that female artists worked with female songwriters more than male artists worked with female songwriters. "These agenda-setting songs are like so many other forms of entertainment - reflective of a largely male perspective". Here, the music industry reaches proportional representation with the USA population, as 42 percent of artists were from underrepresented groups across six years and 600 popular songs. Less than 6% of female songwriters had six or more credits. The majority of songs with a female artist were penned by another woman.

The women with the most songwriting credits are Nicki Minaj, with 15; Rihanna, with 13; and Taylor Swift, with 11. For bands, the gender makeup was 91.3 percent male (70.5 percent of bands were all men), and for duos, 94.9 percent of members were male.

A staggering new report has found that, over the past six years, less than one in 10 Grammy nominees was female.

The study also highlighted a pronounced gender gap when it came to Grammy nominees. Not one woman has been nominated for Producer of the Year since 2013. Fewer than 10 percent of nominees for Record or Album of the Year were female. Roughly a third of the female nominees at the previous six Grammy's were women from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups.
